Cult Of Luna - Somewhere Along The Highway

Cult of Luna have made a lasting impression on me. I decided to go to one of their concerts in Holland last time they were here, without really knowing the songs. That day turned out to be one of the worst days of my life so I was a tad depressed when I entered the venue they were about to play. They played an amazing show that night that connected with my emotions with ease and overwhelmed me tremendously. Lets see if this new album can do the same.

I say yes, but I’m hearing a lot of no’s from people around me too. The most obvious thing about the album is that the music is even more gentile than before, which is absolutely no problem for me. This stuff actually makes you feel like driving somewhere along the highway, in the dark.

So the music has reached another level on the atmospheric perspective, but that can be a blow to the head for them as well I think. The no’s that I hear are from people saying that they shouldn’t be calming down anymore, but make a bit more noise, so I guess it’s entirely personal whether you dig this album or not.

I certainly do, I love the way they get you after a long melodic part, kicking in with full distortion and a hardcore-based roar. Truly some music for your darker days, but I reckon it’s good material for stoned moments as well. Keywords for this album are depressing, relaxing and overwhelming and I can dig that.

Worth mentioning is that a banjo is put to use in the track ‘Back To Chapel Town’ (not too sure if it’s that track, because my 99-track version tracklist doesn’t correspond that well with what’s on the back of the promo). I never considered it being such a sad instrument when it’s played very slowly. Nice addition for an extremely atmospheric composition.

Also cool are the effects used in ‘Dim’. Sounds almost Slipknot-like what’s happening there.

If you enjoyed their previous material this will certainly appeal to you as well. Fans of this post hardcore material looking for something a little more relaxing have just found a great addition to their collection. But I also recommend it to fans of funeral and stoner doom.
