Suffocation - Suffocation
Let's start with a few quotes. Digitalmetal wrote that putting out a selftitled album after
being in the running for a long time (albeit with a period of inactivity) either means that
inpiration took a day off or it means a return to form.
And luckily with Suffocation the latter was the case. Terrorizer described this as an harsh, ugly, wife-beater of a death-metal album. And that was a positive thing mind you. And they're both right actually.

I really must confess that I've never really been into Suffocation. Either because I just missed them, but probably because of the fact that they already broke up when I got into death-metal (about 10 years ago). I started checking out their back catalogue after their come-back album Souls To Deny and well, decided that I did miss something.
But so far for the little back story, this new self titled disc kills. A cathartic whirlwind
of blasts, intertwining riffage, Frank Mullen's dry bellowing grunt, a lot of almost dramatic
sounding guitar solo's and that all hammered and pounded into a fine collection of songs.
It took me quite some time to really get into this record, because of it's complexity but the overall aggressive tenure really stitches it all together nicely. It really is a return to form, only sounding like a band that's firmly rooted in the now. A modern natural sound, forgoing almost all digital triggering, a nice buzzing guitar tone.. it all sounds great.
I'm going to stop analyzing this right now by the way, because you just have to experience
this concrete slab of f*&^ng death-metal while it grabs you by the throat and beats you to
a bloody pulp. A wife-beater of an album indeed.
