Manowar - The Sons Of Odin
Once again the self proclaimed metal kings have returned. Albeit this time with an EP and not with a full length album. Their first in their 25 year career of binging and purging and er.. of course metal. As a taster of the forthcoming album it shows that Manowar has not deviated from their path. In fact the only thing that ever changed in their music was that they incorporated more and more classical elements in their music. With the Puccini cover ‘Nessum Dorma’ on their last album as a clear epitome.
The mini album consist of two live tracks and three new songs. It starts of with 'The Ascension' which is virtually the intro to the next track called ‘King Of Kings’. Previously heard on the audio section of their DVD Hell on Earth Part 4 this up-tempo song shows that Manowar still knows how to play metal. Even the biggest Manowar hater can’t say that this is a bad produced piece of music. Oh yes it’s over the top and yes its over-bombastic just like we’re used to.
Anyway, the following three new tracks are quite slow, even for Manowar standards. It starts of with ‘Odin’ which is again another intro to the closing songs of the mini-album. ‘Gods of War’ and the ‘Sons of Odin’ have a great sound, it’s just that the tracks are maybe a little too slow, but that’s my point of view.
This EP is also available with an extra DVD which includes all the before mentioned songs in 5.1 surround sound. It is not really adding something special to the songs. Also included is a 30 minute documentary of the fan convention which took place at the Earthshaker Fest 2006. Interesting, but I guess mostly in particular to the people who actually were there. To my view this DVD is pretty OK, but not really necessary. Especially when the upcoming DVD of Manowar covers virtually the entire Earthshaker festival.
