Iron Savior - Megatropolis
Megatropolis, what a lame name can you pick for a record. Well, at least the artwork is as horrific as the album name, so at least there is some correspondence. Oh, wait, even that is not the case; it is a heavy metal record and…
It’s from Germany! Never was I so sceptical about a record before I had listened to it, but of course I gave it a fair chance and I was pleasantly surprised. It turned out that the band was raised by Piet Sielck, who was in a very early lineup of Helloween back in the early '80s, and that he has no German accent whatsoever. I soon found out that Iron Savior also manages to write very catchy and strong songs, with slight rebellion flavour. Songs like ‘Running Riot’ and ‘Cybernatic Queen’ breathe the same vibe as a band as Skid Row did back in the days. Iron Savior however was only formed in 1997 and originally featured Kai Hansen from Gamma Ray and formerly from Helloween. Altogether I was pretty pleasantly surprised by this record, but of course there is little new and refreshing in this genre, apart from the modern sound of the record, which some people might find too modern.
It seemed that I had to lay aside my prejudices, because Iron Savior delivered a more than decent heavy metal record, with some modern touches which I found pretty enthralling…but no, oh god no; at the end of ‘Cyber Her’ there is an absolutely horrible part of a German guy getting angry at a speaking computer, that ruins it all you stupid Germans! Damn you! A full point score deduction is what it costs you!
