Type O Negative - Symphony for the devil
Some years ago I wanted to go to a Type O Negative concert in Cologne. But when we wanted to order some tickets they told us we were about 10 minutes too late. The last tickets had been sold. Fuck man. But luckily they released a dvd. Let’s check it out.
It said it would include a live performance, 33 minutes of behind the scenes material, an interview, 40 pictures of the band members, commentary track and bios of the bandmembers. Well that sounds promising. But it also said it would include a CD track (or cd) with a Santana medley. Well I could not find that one on this dvd, and there was no extra cd. I guess they forgot to send it.
Well, I hit the playbutton and here we go. The first 5 minutes give you an impression about the Type O Negative fans and the band on tour, like a crew member who wants to rape several people in the tourbus and a dude who would give his arm to see Type O Negative, and he actually misses one arm. Well let’s hope for him he didn’t really give that arm for a liveshow.
Then it is time for the first song. The gig is recorded at the Bizarre Festival in 1999. and I immediately asked myself why did they use an old show for the dvd. Why didn’t they use some recordings after ‘Life is killing me’? Non the less, I’m watching the show while I lay back on my comfy chair with a bottle of beer in my hand. I must say the director did a good job, several camera angles are used and you see the bandmembers on the right moments. The sound of the recording is okay, but I’ve heard better on live dvd’s of other bands.
Between the songs we are treated on behind the scenes footages. You see Peter sitting on a very rancid toilet explaining how he likes to shit.
And what the fuck is that dude doing? Eating pussy? Well you’ll see a lot of nonsense. That tour had to be great for the band. In a few words: The band and the crew are really mad. Type O Negative may seem rough, but when they are drunk they act like children.
Alltough there are no newer songs on this dvd like I don’t wanna be me, I’m quiet pleased with the song selection. It includes my favourite songs Wolfmoon, Black number 1, My girlfriends girlfriend, Everything dies and Christian woman.
Well the live footage is great, but I must say that I would skip the behind the scenes parts. They are really funny, but seeing it twice was enough for me. Perhaps after half a year it will be funny again.
Type O Negative must have liked the Pantera home video’s. Because this dvd includes a parody on The Incredible Hulk as well. On this one you’ll see The Incredible Jew.
Okay, let’s get to the other stuff on the dvd, like the Interview by Juliya of FUSE tv. Well the interview is as I suspected, a big mess. It’s a little informing, but mainly it is just amusing. Like the behind the scenes the interview is cool, but just for once in a year or so.
About the bios of the bandmembers: Very short. I really expected more. It doesn’t give the dvd an extra value. But I don’t think that was their intention. Then there is the photogallery of the members. You’ll see pictures of their entire lifes. Funny, but again, watching it once in a year should be enough. The dvd also includes a commentary audio track. Well, I suppose you can guess how it’s like. A lot of nonsense.
I really liked the live footage, but I expected a little more from the extra stuff. If you like seeing a dude putting grapes up his ass and let them eat by someone else you’ll love this dvd.
