Devian - God To The Illfated
One of my first reviews for MR was for the debut album of Devian. The band with ex-Marduk members Legion and Emil Dragutinovic amongst others delivered with Ninewinged Serpent a bonecrushing beauty. During an European tour with Vader they didn’t do a very good job though. Both Mindsaver and myself went to see that package, in respectively Den Bosch and Haarlem, but we both weren't impressed at all. On stage they just missed the power to impress. Hopefully that’s not the case with their second full-length, God To The Illfated.
God To The Illfated continues were Ninewinged Serpent left, but it doesn’t sound as impressive as its predecessor at all. With opener ‘Mask Of Virtue’ and the title track they’ve put two amazingly brutal, fast, heavy and catchy songs on this disc, but the other 8 songs… 6 of them are just mediocre tracks. Nice blackened death anthems, but they nowhere approach the status of special or original. ‘Saintbleeder’ and ‘Summerdeath’ are the worst ones on God To The Illfated. Both the songs do remind me of the soulless and powerless performance earlier this year and that’s not a good thing.
This record all in all has 2 90% songs, 6 75% songs and 2 60% ones. Furthermore their debut album impressed more as a whole. With this new baby, they didn’t succeed in overwhelming the listener by their talent. Devian just showed that they could vary their sound more than perhaps most people thought, but this isn’t really a good thing. Still they delivered a decent album, but with in mind that they made Ninewinged Serpent just a year ago I definitely know which album I will pick when I want to listen to their music.
