Im Leben - Vitriol
Founded at the beginning of 2006 in Georgia, black metal band Im Nebel started as an experiment among three musicians. A successful experiment, you may say, since Im Nebel has released their first full length album Vitriol. The introduction of the album sets a cold, mysterious atmosphere, which is more or less interrupted by the following song, 'Inconsistent Thoughts'. A track fast and diverse in tempo and a huge contrast to the seemingly slow introduction.
If you’re not up for the whole keyboard thing, you won’t appreciate Vitriol, since the keyboard has a pretty dominant position in the tracks. Whenever the keyboard disappears to the background, the guitar takes over. Basically, you’re blown away by melodies throughout all of the songs which is a bit tiring in my opinion. For instance, 'The Journey to the Center of I' has a beautiful introduction, but after a while it seems as if the guitarist as well as the keyboardist feel the obligation to prove themselves and make it way too complicated. I like a challenge, but this is just too much.
I already thought I noticed something a bit strange during the second track, and 'Faded Mankind' confirms my suspicion: vocalist Vasil must be a big fan of Arcturus, since he obviously has listened to Simen "Vortex" Hestnæs very carefully as his role model.
I must say that Vitriol isn’t even that bad of an album for a ‘first try’. The fact that it makes me nervous with all its melodies, is probably a matter of personal taste. If you’re into the whole keyboard and melody thing, you might like it. If you’re more the atmosphere kind of person, please believe me when I say you won’t find much on this album after the introduction since every attempt to create somewhat of a feeling is cut off by the overkill of instruments.
