Tombs - Winter Hours
Brooklyn’s Tombs will release their Relapse Records debut Winter Hours this month, and before me lies a promo copy of this monolithic record. Tombs have made a lasting impression on me, read on and find out why.
Tombs is one of the few bands that manage to combine musical styles in such an original and refreshing mix, it just blows you away. These guys have brewed a perfect concoction of hardcore, stoner, doom and most importantly, black metal. All this is delivered in a very raw production but with a more loose rock undertone to it rather than the shrieking black metal bathroom sound. The songs vary between blasting, hypnotic black metal, crawling doom metal, up-tempo hardcore beats and dramatic ambient passages, all together creating a dynamic and compelling whole with the moniker Winter Hours. A suiting title for this cold, depressing and hateful record.
I definitely got sucked into the world of Tombs with this record, and I’m very keen to find out how this band turns out in a live environment. The album is a hard hitting effort that indeed resonates deeply within the listener as the bio states. This is a Relapse worthy release, fit for fans of Neurosis, Mastodon, Deathspell Omega, Isis and such. Now I just hope they’ll get a European tour real fast.
