Steven Wilson - Insurgentes
With the release of Insurgentes we received the first full-length solo album of Steven Wilson. Most people will know him as the mastermind behind the band Porcupine Tree, but he also released CDs with No-Man and Blackfield and he produced, co-wrote and played on a couple of Opeth’s albums to name just a few things he did.
Insurgentes is a record where Steven Wilson is searching the boundaries of progressive rock. ‘Salvaging’ for example is a track with a lot of strings added to the orchestration and with some flirting with ambient. ‘Veneno Para Las Hadas’ then is a reticent ballad followed by ‘No Twilight Within The Courts Of The Sun’, which has a very unconventional and long guitar solo as intro. It’s easier to describe what isn’t in his music than what is, but when you’re charmed by Steven Wilson’s other bands/projects you should definitely try Insurgentes.

With Insurgentes Steven Wilson didn’t just write a nice solo album by the way, he in fact released a beautiful soundtrack CD. And the best thing is: you can decide for yourself for what kind of movie it is written. You just have to close your eyes while listening to the ten impressive tracks and let fantasy be your guide.
I didn’t rate this album on purpose, ‘cause I actually think that it can’t (or at least shouldn’t) be judged. I mean: would you rate Mozart’s music? Van Gogh’s paintings? Chris Garver’s (Miami Ink) tattoos? I guess not. It’s just beautiful art and sure there can be discussions about it. Some will love it, others don’t, but therefore it’s art.
