CiLiCe - Deranged Headtrip
Cilice is a new Dutch band which is knocking on the door of the new hype in metalland, namely mathmetal and all of its spin offs. Cilice had already impressed me with an excellent performance earlier this year, so when I got the opportunity to get my hands on their debut album I couldn’t resist.
As new as the name Cilice may sound, the musicians aren’t that wet behind the ears. They have already proven themselves in bands like Orphanage, Neuk and Smogus. None of those bands, though, can be seen as an influence to the sound of Cilice.
As mentioned their music can be put in the math metal basket. Their influences range from Meshuggah to Mike Patton, although I have to admit that I can’t really find much Patton influences except for the way Daniël uses his voice.
When mentioning his voice, we have found one of the biggest selling points of Cilice. He already showed us in Smogus that he had a versatile voice, but because of the restrictions of the nu-metal genre, his voice couldn’t blossom with that band. Now that he has the room to challenge his capabilities, the listener has the chance to really enjoy his voice. Melodic parts, growling parts, spastic parts, nothing seems to be too difficult for Daniël to manage. Excellent performance! The same can be said of Philipp Moser who shows some nice skills on this disc, though his drum rhythms can use a bit more variation.
Deranged Headtrip is just an excellent album of an already excellent Dutch export product. I hope that they can keep up this level of performance and everything will work out fine for them!
Listening tips: ‘God Of Lies’, ‘Drone’, ‘Chernobyl’.
