Aguirre - Calvaire
The French metal scene is gradually catching up with the rest of the world, yet the underground already has some pearls to offer. Aguirre is one of them, they have just released their debut full length Calvaire, after just one split record with Hongo from Spain and a demo. Get ready for some sludgy doom metal!
Aguirre play painful, dragging sludge/doom metal, music that gets you down so to speak. A massive wall of distorted sound conveying depressing riffs and haunted vocals is what you find on Calvaire. Overall the record listens away pretty easily, the production is not that raw yet also not too smooth. Just massively loud, depressed and haunted. Especially in the vocal area you hear a clear state of discomfort, just like it should be!
Fans of a decent slab of slow, depressed sludge/doom should definitely check out Aguirre. It’s not highly original or ground-breaking, but the overall sound is pleasant enough to listen to and the quality of the songs themselves is more than decent. Doom yourself into a depression with Calvaire!
