Comeback Kid - Wake the Dead
So, here we have the second release of Canada's Comeback Kid, 'Wake the Dead'. The hardcore world is psyched, but what does Metalrage think of this release?
Well, it's a great release from Victory records. The sound is good overall. The guitars sound well, backings are well balanced. But am I as psyched as the rest of the world? No. No mistake, I think it's a great record and with the new style Comeback Kid has chosen they have a winner.
Other than making it as tough as possible, as a lot of bands seem to do these days, they chose to get some influences from the popular emocore and make this a bit of a more melodic hardcore record.
The only thing I miss on this record is more "toughness". There aren't a lot of breakdowns, but the ones they do have, lack vocal strength. Just a little extra power would've done it.
On top of that, multiple tracks are used, sometimes in one sentence. What I mean is: at half sentence you hear a switch to a second track, maybe to keep the vocal power equal throughout the song, but it sounds a bit fake, too smooth. The fluctuations in the vocals make certain parts of a song stand out and make you remember those certain parts. Smooth it out and you eliminate that. It is a great record though. Great riffs, and a nice sound.
But does this melodic hardcore fit in todays hardcore sound?
Or will/should it be banned from it?
Is this the latest or is it just another singalong with more studio time?
Judge for yourself.
