Children Of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet?
Totally unaware of it’s release date, I found this record in the store. Listened to it, and bought it, thinking that I’ve got all the previous releases so this must kick ass too. But I was wrong…
What has happened for me not to instantly like it anymore? I think it’s the more progressive direction they’ve chosen with this release. It has given the album a relatively slow pass, and that’s something the COB should definitely not do.
Now I’m surely not saying it is a bad release. That would be straight up lying. Some tracks I like, others go in on one side and exit on the other.
The first track “Living Dead Beat” I find great, while the one after that, title track “Are You Dead Yet?” doesn’t do that much for me at all. They’ve tried to put a real slow one on it again like they did on the previous album with “Angels Don’t Kill”, but “Punch Me I Bleed” doesn’t even get near it.
One thing I must really praise about this album is the sublime sound they’ve put together. It’s mastered excruciatingly well, especially the bass guitar and the keyboards sound awesome. Which does make the album a whole lot more pleasant to listen to.
The keyboards in my eyes seem to be the only thing really progressing again. Janne “Jameson” Warman (what a nice nickname!) constantly looks for different things to do to keep the music interesting, and he does a fantastic job at that. You can conclude that at the intro of the CD already, marvellous tunes.
One of the lyrics caught my attention, even made me smile too. We all know the ultra cliché “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger”. Alexi has an interesting variation on it; “what doesn’t kill you only makes you pissed off!!!”.
So overall, I still would have bought it eventually, but this is certainly not one of the best Bodom releases to see the light of day, even though is has a killer sound. I expected to be able to hand out at least ten more points.
