Delain - Proving to be the next gothic sensation
Delain is the musical project of Martijn Westerholt, ex-keyboardist of Within Temptation. He was forced to leave the band due to an illness, but now he’s back with Delain and just kicked-off a Dutch tour to prove that Delain has evolved into a real band which can participate at the top-level of gothic.
In front of not even a half packed Tivoli a Mexican band opened of which I really wouldn’t know the name anymore. It doesn’t really matter, because the gothic of this threesome wasn’t very arousing. The front lady made all these standard gothic movements and couldn’t reach some high notes which was hilarious when they covered a famous opera song (don’t ask me which one!). The guitar player was actually a better singer but couldn’t make up for the loss.
After some more people entered the venue it was time for Delain to show that it’s Holland’s next gothic rock sensation. It definitely helps that the front lady, Charlotte Wessels, is a beautiful girl to see. In the beginning of the show you could see she was a bit nervous but she and the whole band loosened up during the set and you could clearly see that they were having fun, which is always a very good point. Delain distinguishes itself from other gothic acts by sounding more like a rock band and they haven’t got the typical image of a gothic band; while I’m not a fan of gothic they surely surprised me in a good way! With their debut album just released the setlist wasn’t very surprising of course, but it was a surprise that George Oosthoek (ex-Orphanage) showed up in the middle of the set to do some of his mean grunts; it really contributed to the good vibe of the evening. Delain finished the show with the bonus track version of ‘Frozen’ and they surely proved tonight that they are a promising band!
